MAKE A CONNECTION 5k FUN RUN/WALK

Join the North Region Employee Well-Being and Resiliency committee for a meaningful walk/run dedicated to strengthening connection, raising awareness, and supporting the well‑being of our health care community.

This event brings together physicians, APPs, clinical staff, and friends to foster community while shining a light on the mental health challenges and suicide risk faced by health care practitioners. Together, we aim to break down stigma and encourage seeking care for mental health care.

Enjoy a walk or run at your own pace along a 3.1‑mile paved loop, with the flexibility to adjust the route to meet your comfort level. Please bring your own water bottle.

Families and leashed dogs are welcome—everyone has a place in this conversation and community. There is no cost for UCHealth employees, families or friends.

Two sweet Johnstown girls, third-grader Emilia Stewart and second-grader Dillon Paswaters, decided to turn a simple craft project into real help for people with cancer.

They made colorful paper bags and “squishies,” small paper fidgets you can squeeze and crinkle like a stress ball, then went door to door selling them around their neighborhood.

“We made them because we wanted to help people who have cancer,” Dillon said.

The neighbors responded in the best way possible. They bought the crafts, encouraged the girls, and helped spread the word. The girls sold out and even made more to meet the demand, ultimately raising $78.

“I hope it will be enough money to help people at the cancer center and at least fix up one or two people,” Dillon said. This week, the girls delivered their donation to the UCHealth Cancer Center in Fort Collins, where they were greeted by staff who wanted to meet the girls and thank them for their extraordinary kindness. The donation has been allocated to UCHealth Northern Colorado Foundation’s Oncology Patient and Family Support Fund, which provides funding to help cover essential expenses for patients and families throughout their care journey.

 

“Emilia and Dillon’s generosity is truly inspiring,” said Amanda Giacalone, senior director of UCHealth Northern Colorado Foundation. “Their creativity and compassion remind us that anyone- no matter their age- can make a meaningful difference for patients in our community.”

Emilia shared her message for patients. “We hope that you get better, and we hope you never have to go through that pain again.”

Dillon added hers. “I did this for you because we want to help you guys. It’s a good cause. It’s going to help people. And it’s super nice.”

The girls say they are already imagining new crafts and new ways to give back, inspired by the neighbors who supported them and the people they hope to help.

HUMAN BEAN NORTHERN COLORADO AND COLORADO EAGLES PARTNER TO SUPPORT LOCAL CANCER CARE

Now through Friday, January 16, stop by a Human Bean location to join the cause.

Human Bean Northern Colorado has made it a long-standing tradition to support cancer fighters in northern Colorado with programs like Coffee for a Cure. This time The Human Bean is running a fundraiser to support the Colorado Eagles Fight Cancer game on Saturday, January 10 which benefits the UCHealth Northern Colorado Foundation Oncology Patient Assistance Fund. Now through January 16, 100% of proceeds from The Human Bean’s “Purple Rain” drink from all 11 drive-thru locations will be donated to the Foundation’s fund.

The “Purple Rain” drink is a latte with honey, vanilla and lavender. It is the perfect complement to the special lavender jerseys the Colorado Eagles will be wearing as they take on the San Diego Gulls at Blue Arena in honor of those fighting cancer in our community.

To support local cancer fighters by purchasing a Purple Rain drink, customers can visit any one of The Human Bean locations between 5:00 am and 8:00 pm Monday through Saturday, or 6:00 am through 8:00 pm on Sundays.

The UCHealth Northern Colorado Foundation Employee Scholarship Program is made possible through the extraordinary generosity of our donors. Their support reflects a shared commitment to investing in the people who care for our patients, support our teams, and strengthen the communities we serve.

For the 2025–2026 academic year, donor contributions funded scholarships for 48 UCHealth employees in Northern Colorado, awarding a total of $88,000 to support continued education and professional development. These scholarships benefit employees across Northern Colorado in a wide range of roles, from clinical and patient-facing positions to corporate and operational teams, and at various stages of their educational journeys.

By supporting education, donors help employees develop new skills, expand their knowledge, and grow as health care professionals, advancing excellence in patient care and service. This investment creates lasting impact not only for individual recipients, but also for their families, their teams, and the patients and communities who rely on UCHealth every day.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the donors whose continued support makes this program possible year after year. Below, this year’s scholarship recipients share reflections on how this meaningful investment has supported their educational and personal journeys.

Ellie R. | Family Nurse Practitioner

To the kind donors,

 

Thank you so much for the UCHealth Northern Colorado Scholarship. I am overjoyed to be a recipient of this scholarship award. Because of your generosity, working as a medical-surgical bedside RN while going back to school for my master’s will ease some of the financial stress of doing both at the same time. I am nearing the end of my program, which means I am in my clinical rotations. Some of which have required me to drive 1+ hour multiple times throughout the week to get my clinical hours complete while balancing my work schedule.

 

Working for UCHealth for the past 5 years has provided me with so many opportunities to further my career in nursing. From wonderful and caring managers, career advancement opportunities, amazing coworkers, a safe and supportive place to work, and a fantastic work culture at Poudre Valley Hospital, I have felt blessed.

 

This past April, I got in a mountain biking accident at Horsetooth Reservoir. I ended up fracturing the transverse processes of the L3 and L4 of my spine. This was my first time experiencing UCHealth as a patient in an emergency situation. From the CNA at Harmony urgent care who braided my hair for me when I couldn’t lift my arm, to the prompt ER nurse practitioner provider who sent me to PVH emergency department for further work up, to all of the wonderful care I received at Poudre Valley Hospital from my own coworkers, I was beyond impressed. I felt proud to be an employee of such a wonderful institute. This Scholarship also helps provide me with finances for when I had to take medical leave from my back injury this summer, so the timing of receiving this scholarship feels like a blessing.

 

I moved to Fort Collins immediately after graduating nursing school from UNMC in Nebraska in 2020. I truly feel I am living my small town little girl dreams of living in a beautiful city, getting to do my favorite outdoor activities (I have since fully recovered from my accident!), working in a fulfilling career, making an impact for the sick, being able to bike to work from my home, and chasing my dream career I have had since 16 years old of becoming a nurse practitioner.

 

Thank you for giving back to the beautiful profession of nursing. I hope to do the same as you to others someday.

Dear generous donors,

Grounded in my experience as a retired servicemember and my PhD training in Counseling Education and Supervision, my goal is to serve as a counselor educator and clinical supervisor who prepares practitioners to deliver culturally humble, evidence-based care. I am focused on strengthening support for service members, first responders, and underserved groups. Within UCHealth, I will contribute by designing staff training modules, supervising learners in clinical rotations, and coordinating outreach to reduce barriers to timely behavioral health services. I will further strengthen care by mentoring interns, ensuring interventions remain aligned with current evidence, and collaborating with community partners to streamline referrals and improve continuity of care.

 

This scholarship has had a direct impact on my education. It has reduced financial strain, which allowed me to maintain full academic momentum and invest in essential resources that help me meet program milestones on time and maintain high academic standards.

 

The scholarship is also shaping my career trajectory. With less financial pressure, I can focus on developing teaching competencies, strengthening my supervision skills, and advancing a line of research that translates into training modules for future counselors. My long-term plan is to teach, supervise, and produce applied scholarship that improves services for military families and other underserved groups.

 

The day-to-day effects are meaningful. I can spend more time preparing lessons, completing clinical documentation with care, and engaging in reflective practice. The support eases the transition from military to civilian professional life and allows me to protect time for family and wellness, which sustains my effectiveness as a scholar-practitioner.

 

I am deeply grateful for this investment. Your support helps me succeed now and positions me to pay it forward through teaching, supervision, and service to the community.

I currently serve as the manager of the Harmony Freestanding Emergency Department, where our team is proud to provide high-acuity care in a community-focused setting. Beyond my role at UCHealth, I am actively involved with the Emergency Nurses Association, where I lead initiatives on quality, safety, and injury prevention. This work allows me to partner with local organizations on projects such as firearm safety education, suicide awareness, and mental health and wellness outreach, efforts that directly support the health of the communities we serve.

Hello, my name is Stacy M., and I’m incredibly grateful to have been selected for this award.

I’ve been a phlebotomist at Medical Center of the Rockies for 12 years. In June of last year, my younger brother was in a serious car accident and spent five months in critical care. Watching him fight for his life was incredibly difficult, but the medical staff, especially the respiratory therapists, were amazing. Their care and dedication inspired me to pursue a career in respiratory therapy.

Being a full-time student while working night shifts and commuting daily has been challenging, both physically and financially. This award provides much-needed support, and I’m truly thankful to UCHealth and everyone who invests in student education.

2026 Charitable Tax Law Changes

Beginning January 1, 2026, several changes to the federal tax code will take effect under recently passed legislation. These changes may influence how donors plan and time their charitable giving. While UCHealth Northern Colorado Foundation cannot offer tax or legal advice, we want to ensure you have the information you need to have informed conversations with your advisors.

Below is a high-level overview of key changes, along with considerations you may wish to discuss with your tax or financial professional.

Key Changes for 2026

1. Universal Charitable Deduction for Standard Filers

For the first time in many years, donors who take the standard deduction may claim a limited charitable deduction:

  • Up to $1,000 for single filers
  • Up to $2,000 for joint filers

(Some gifts, such as those to donor-advised funds or private non-operating foundations, are not eligible.)

Who may be affected: Households that take the standard deduction.

2. New 0.5% Deduction “Floor” for Itemizers

Beginning in 2026, itemizers will no longer be able to deduct the first 0.5% of their AGI in charitable contributions.

For example, a donor with $500,000 AGI will not be able to deduct the first $2,500 of charitable contributions.

Who may be affected: Primarily high-income households, small-business owners, or those who regularly itemize.

3. Permanently Extended Charitable Provisions

Two previously temporary charitable incentives are now permanent:

  • Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
    • Donors aged 70½ or older can continue making gifts directly from an IRA to a qualified nonprofit.

These gifts can:

  • Count toward required minimum distributions
  • Reduce taxable income
  • Provide an option to fund a one-time split-interest gift (up to $54,000)

Higher Estate & Gift Tax Exemptions Beginning in 2026:

  • $15 million exemption for individuals
  • $30 million exemption for married couples

Many donors will continue choosing legacy gifts because they align with personal values, not just tax incentives.

Cap on Itemized Deduction Value

Regardless of a donor’s tax bracket, itemized deductions will be limited to 35 cents per dollar. This may influence timing and strategy for households that typically make larger charitable gifts.

What These Changes Could Mean for You

If You Take the Standard Deduction

Beginning in 2026, you may be eligible for a universal charitable deduction even if you do not itemize your taxes. This could make your giving more tax-advantaged than before.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • You may decide to time some gifts in 2026 to take advantage of the new deduction.
  • If you are age 65 or older, the expanded senior deduction taking effect in 2025 may increase your overall charitable capacity.
  • Even smaller or recurring gifts may now provide a modest tax benefit, depending on your personal tax situation.

 If You Are an Itemizer or a High-Income Household

For donors who itemize deductions, or whose income places them in higher tax brackets, two major changes may affect how you plan your giving:

  • You may choose to “bunch” or consolidate several years of gifts into one year, potentially using a donor-advised fund, to maximize deductibility.
  • It may be advantageous to accelerate some giving into 2025 before the new deduction floor and cap take effect.
  • Giving appreciated non-cash assets such as stock, real estate, or business interests may continue to offer significant tax advantages.
  • If you have an existing multi-year pledge, you may wish to complete payments earlier to benefit from current rules.

Your tax advisor can help you determine which of these strategies may apply to your situation.

If You Are Age 70½ or Older

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) from IRAs continue to be one of the most tax-efficient ways to give. A QCD may:

  • Reduce your taxable income
  • Satisfy the required minimum distributions
  • Be used (up to $54,000 in a one-time option) to establish certain types of charitable gift annuities

This provision may be especially beneficial if you prefer to give directly from retirement assets.

 If You Are Thinking About Your Legacy

Beginning in 2026, the federal estate and gift tax exemption will rise to:

  • $15 million for individuals
  • $30 million for married couples

While this may affect how families plan gifts to heirs, many donors continue to include charitable bequests because legacy planning reflects personal values, not just tax policy.

If you’re revisiting your estate plans, this may be a good moment to explore how charitable giving fits into your long-term goals.

Excitement is brewing as The Human Bean Northern Colorado gets ready to mark the 20th anniversary of their signature fundraising event—Coffee for a Cure. On Friday, October 17, all 10 drive-through locations across northern Colorado will donate 100 percent of sales to support cancer patients at local Banner and UCHealth facilities. Representatives from Banner Health and UCHealth will serve as guest baristas at each location.

The very best way to support this milestone event is simple: stop by your nearest The Human Bean location on October 17. Every dollar raised at the window that day goes directly toward providing care, comfort and hope for patients in our community. By enjoying your favorite drink, you’re helping ensure that local cancer patients and their families receive the support.

To date, this event has raised more than $647,000 for local cancer fighters—an incredible testament to the generosity of our community and the dedication of The Human Bean Northern Colorado.
