A recent gift from a local spice shop is helping the UCHealth Family Medicine Center (FMC) Food Pantry fill its shelves with fresh, healthy and flavorful fare.

Savory Spice Shop, located in downtown Fort Collins, donated $20,000 to the pantry, along with a quantity of sodium-free spice blends in bulk, which food pantry volunteers measure and give to patrons.

“I feel strongly that good nutrition is fundamental to good health and that flavor, which often comes from spices, helps food taste good,” says Savory Spice Shop owner Susan Kirkpatrick. “Access to flavorful, healthy food is important for everyone in our community. The FMC Food Pantry, located near a health clinic serving people who may also have food insecurity, provides easier access than the large food bank facility in north Fort Collins or in Loveland.”

The food pantry opened in June 2017, and as of December 2018, it had 13,806 client visits from 2,082 households and 5,008 unique individuals. Savory Spice’s generosity will help the pantry continue to provide FMC’s clients with healthful and tasty food choices.

“Savory Spice Shop is fortunate to have the support of the northern Colorado community to make our business a success,” Kirkpatrick says, “and we are happy to be able to share the benefits of our good business with others who are less fortunate.”
